peace process

I've been casually following the news transmissions regarding the recent
hostilities between the Palistinians and Israel. This latest round of murder
was sparked, as I understand things, when the Palistinians demanded that a
tunnel dug by Israeli (?) archaeologists be closed, it wasn't, people died.
Were there objections to the project before or during its completion?

What is the significance of this tunnel, are archaeologists being used as
political dupes to undermine Palistinian sovereignty - that was what the peace
process was about was it not - or is the PLO willing to site any reason to
capture media attention? I do mean media and not world attention because the
media is not producing due diligence with respect to reporting the real issues
of why the conflict is happening.
