Race redux

I just had to ask one more question and make one more observation.

Q: Which "white people" are we talking about when we talk about white
people? It's been quite awhile since "my" white folk (the Irish) invaded
anyone. Seems to that we are once again talking about culture, not melanin.

O: I've been thinking about Mr. Hicks' question about examples of "melanin-
deficient" peoples (note the plural) being conquered/oppressed by people of
color. Does anyone with better history know the circumstances of the Muslim
conquest of Spain (and, quite nearly, France)? OK, that's a question rather
than an observation, but I think that (a) we can find such examples (although
I think it's a silly exercise, since it still focuses on the category of race)
and (b) we have got to talk about cultures and resources and all that stuff to
really begin to get to the heart of all this.

Have an obstreperous day!
