Recognition reflex

If I'm in the wrong ListServ please point me in the right direction.

I have often noticed, while working with children and speaking with adults,
the rolling of a person's eyes in various directions ( e.g. up/left,
down/right) within the eyesockets while responding to questions or
difficult subjects. Presumably (at least in folklore) the eye movements
are related to thoughts, private and unexpressed, that the person has at
that moment.

I posted a querie on an educational ListServ and got no responses that
pointed to specific information. Is there research that would help me
understand this phenomenon a bit better? I'm gettting really curious as
information eludes me.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Keith
