I have myself done some work on the representation of europeans in early
non-european art. Taussig seems to have completely missed a lot of
excellent comparative material that would have made his case much more
complex.

I would refer people interested in this issue to much neglected earlier
work like Julia Blackburn's "The White Men" and Julius Lips womderful
(from 1937) "The Savage Hits Back" which has an introduction by Malinowski.
