There are many people who agree with you about the dangerous marriage of academia and advertising. The latest issue of "Lingua Franca" (my favorite magazine) has a very critical story about a market-research company staffed with semioticians. Some think its immoral. Some think its bad semiotics. Others think its hokum that doesn't work. Many of us think the future of anthropology (a very small and endangered tribe of about 5,000) hinges on breaking down the arbitrary divisions between theory and practice, academic and applied, mind and body. That is why I got so upset at your post, and cast aspersions right back. I apologize for an intemperate post, and urge you NOT to go back to lurking. Writing a dissertation is a miserable and emotional chore, and everyone needs a wider community to talk too during the process.
