I don't know who posted the AP story about Thai prostitutes or why, but I was
intrigued by one aspect as I read it. There is a clear financial similarity
between the notion of selling daughters as prostitutes and marrying them to a
husband selected by the parents for a bride-price. Not only is there cash up
front, but prostitutes apparently may continue to forward earnings to the
parents. In both this system of prostitution and in exogamy, the daughters are
lost to the family/clan.

I would be interested in other perspectives on how the two behaviors should be
compared or contrasted as social or evolutionary strategies of the parents.
