For those interested in an anthropological view of the California
firestorms you may be interested in a paper presented at the 1993 meetings
of the Society for Applied for Applied
Anthropology. Susanna Hoffman (Independent Researcher) presented a paper
titled: "Up from the Embers: The Aftermath of the Oakland Berkeley
Firestorm." This was part of the session titled "Applied Anthropology
and Disasters: Theory, Context and Practice." She lost everything in the
fire. This paper details her
emotional responses, as well as the social and cultural responses of her
community in the recovery process. For a copy of the paper, her address
in the AAA directory reads 50 Buena Vista Ter., San Francisco, CA 94117.
