For those interested in a fairly readable book on current research on
acquired traits, their acquisition and transmittal across generations, try

Gottlieb G. Individual development and Evolution: The genesis of novel
behavior.

This is especially good for people who are 1) interested in the evolution
of novel behavior; and 2) who haven't been keeping up with the literature
on developmental genetics and regulatory processes. If you have been
keeping up with the latter, this is a "So, what?" sort of book. But if you
need a fairly good crash course on why we are stuck with the
selectionist/adaptationist/neosynthetic models of genetic chage qua
evolution, this has it. I also recommend (most humbly, of course) a review
of this book that came out recently, giving more or less the same
recommendations.

Petto AJ. Book Review of Individual development and Evolution: The
genesis of novel behavior. Gottlieb G. Am J Phys Anthropol 1992;
89:127-128.
