HIGH PLAINS SOCIETY FOR APPLIED ANTHROPOLOGY
HOLDS FOURTEENTH ANNUAL MEETING

The fourteenth annual meeting of the High Plains Society for
Applied Anthropology was held April 29 through May 1 in Estes Park, CO.

The meeting focused on "Anthropology and Empowerment". Dr. Tom
Weaver of the University of Arizona gave the plenary address which was
entitled "Indigenous Forestry: The Environment and Development in Northern
Mexico."

A variety of papers were presented by students of Applied
Anthropology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Their panel
discussion was entitled, "Getting the Passage Right: Students Questions,
Observations, and Concerns About Education and Application in
Anthropology."

Other papers were presented by practitioners and faculty from
various states and Canada regarding education, environment, development,
research methods, women and violence, health, and other examples of
community empowerment through applied anthropology.

Dr. Deward E. Walker, Jr. from the Department of Anthropology and
Center for Studies of Ethnicity and Race in America at the University of
Colorado at Boulder was awarded the 1994 Omer C. Stewart award for
exemplary achievement in applied anthropology.
