There are still openings left in the upcoming Cerros field
school. Individuals interested in coming for the complete session
will be given priority, but persons interested in a one or two week
stay will be considered.

For more information please contact Dr. Debra Walker at (305)-453-9683,
e-mail WALKERD@SERVMS.FIU.EDU, or write her at Latin American and Caribbean
Center, FIU, University Park, DM-353, Miami, FL 33199.

THE SITE
Situated on Chetumal Bay in northern Belize, Cerros is widely known as an
ancient Maya center founded over 2000 years ago. The site boasts a small
monumental center and a half-kilometer wide settlement zone. First
investigated in the 1970s by Dr. David Freidel, the site has become
famous for its sculpted polychrome building facades and its system of
ancient canals and drained fields.

FIELD SCHOOL
Sponsored by Florida International University in Miami, the month-long
field school, from June 28 to July 26, will introduce individuals to
archaeological fieldwork, including excavation, survey, recording
procedures, and laboratory analysis. Individuals will have the
opportunity to visit other sites in the vicinity as time and conditions
permit.

Individuals with previous academic and/or field experience in archaeology
are encouraged to apply, although those without previous experience will
also be considered. A bibliography of relevant literature will be made
available to all participants.

LOGISTICS
Individuals will fly into the International Airport in Belize City and
transfer by chartered bus and boat to the field camp. Cerros sits on an
unpopulated peninsula and is best reached by boat from Corozal, a small
town just south of the Mexican border. As fieldwork in the tropical
climate can be arduous, participants should be in good physical
condiction. Accomodations will be in thatched casitas at a small lodge
on the opposite side of the peninsula, approximately 2 miles from the
site. Participants are advised that camp conditions are spartan and
chores will be assigned. The lodge is accessible by boat or 4-wheel
drive vehicle only.

REGISTRATION AND FEES
Undergraduates may register for ANT 4908, Directed Field Research.
Students may register for 3 or 6 hours of course credit. In addition to
FIU tuition, a fee of $1500.00 will be charged to cover room, board,
materials, supplies, and transportation within Belize. The
price will be prorated for individuals interested instaying for
only part of the four week session. Registration at FIU is not
a requirement.

Roundtrip airfare to Belize City and personal spending money are additional. DUE
TO DIFFICULT LOGISTICS, ALL AIR TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS MUST BE COORDINATED
WITH THE FIELD SCHOOL DIRECTOR.
