Copyright ownership of graduate theses varies. My graduate university
invited me to apply for copyright ownership of my work; my wife's
university says THEY own it AND anything else she produced as a part of
her graduate program there (although they grudgingly admit that a student
has the right to apply for copyright ownership of this material, they still
insist that it stay with them).
