RESEARCH SUPERVISOR
Archaeozoology Laboratory
Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

Applications are invited for this post to assist with a programme
of research on pre-European fishing in New Zealand and the
Chatham Islands being carried out in the Museum of New Zealand Te
Papa Tongarewa. Applicants should have either a Doctorate or
Masters degree in Archaeology and a proven ability to supervise a
small research team in a laboratory environment. Preference will
be given to applicants with academic interest and performance
record in the research field of prehistoric subsistence
economics, particularly marine food exploitation. The applicant
must also have good written communication skills and a
publication record.

Duration of contract: Ten Months (July 1 1994 to April 30 1995)

Salary Range: $35-45,000, depending on experience and
qualifications

Responsible to: The Research Contractor, Dr Janet Davidson, to
produce the necessary outputs to a satisfactory standard and meet
all deadlines; and to the Research Leader, Dr Foss Leach, for day
to day activities.

Responsible for: Supervising the daily activities of two research
assistants.

Research Tasks: To complete the analysis of several faunal
collections from archaeological sites in New Zealand and the
Pacific Islands. To prepare standard osteological comparative
material and carry out statistical analysis of bone measurements.
To prepare draft reports for the research leader.

operating system and non-document editing with Wordstar software
is desirable.

of research on prehistoric trade and exchange in New Zealand
being carried out in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
Applicants should have either a Masters degree or BA Hons in
either History or Anthropology and a proven ability to carry out
research on archival material. Preference will be given to
applicants who have previous experience with National Archives
and the Turnbull Library in Wellington. A reading knowledge of
the Maori language may be an advantage, but is not an essential
requirement.

Duration of contract: Twelve working weeks from November 1 1994

Salary Range: $25-31,000, depending on experience and
qualifications

Responsible to: The Research Contractor, Dr Janet Davidson, to
produce the necessary outputs to a satisfactory standard and meet
all deadlines; and to the Research Leader, Dr Foss Leach, for day
to day activities.

Research Tasks: Carry out archival research on documents, maps
and photographs, looking for ethnographic descriptions of stone-
working and gift exchange in traditional Maori society. Make
copies of all relevant material, transcribing where necessary;
document the source of each item; and collate all findings.
