Not quite "prehistoric" but look at:

Thompson, David
1916 David Thompson's narrative 1784-1812. Edited by J.B. Tyrrel.
Toronto: Champlain Society.

It contains a very interesting remembered account of a battle, ca. 1730,
between Shoshones and Blackfeet in which the combatants formed shield
walls about 100 yards apart and fired volleys of arrows at each other
"until one chief deciuded to subsitute shock for fire" and ordered a charge.
