I was interested in your point that culture must also evolve as a result of
being transmitted and some of the ancillary responses that indicated dis-
affection with that thought from an inherent (mis) understanding of
evolution as some sort of directional or 'progressive' force. Undoubtedly
culture is transmitted and does change slowly through time (the definition
of evolution I prefer). Of equal interest is the role of symbol in the
transmission of culture: is this role equivalent to the role of genes in the
transmission of biological heredity? If so, does that mean to change the
symbolic structure that transmits culture will change the resultant
culture -- providing us with an ability to control the direction of
cultural change through time?
