Laurie, there is really no way to force changes in language, even if
anyone wanted to. However, just as African-Americans have clearly shown
that the word "Negro" (and of course its coarse derivative) is offensive
to them, so women hav e indicated that the words "man" and "mankind" as
generic words for people, human beings, humanity, etc., are offensive to
them because they are excluding words, which make the male sex the
representatives of humanity. You can hardly call either example forced
