Our possible impact on how fast the universe "runs" is pretty wishful
thinking. Some writers neglect to consider how big the universe is!
If entropy is indeed the thread, any thermodynamics textbook is a good
source of information. Entropy was first defined by German physicist
Rudolph Clasius in 1865.
