I believe that a short time ago someone asked for sources for a paper
on beliefs of female defilement/contamination/menstrual taboos. I
just came across an interesting article:

Weyrauch, Walter Otto and Maureen Anne Bell
1993 Autonomous Lawmaking: The Case of the "Gypsies," The
Yale Law Journal, Vol. 103, Nov., No. 2., pp. 323-399.

While dealing primarily with the "Gypsies" it has many interesting
citations of related works.
