A comment on the oft-repeated suggestion that the Middle-Upper Pal.
transition was associated with a REDUCTION in cranial capacity: the data
suggest that early modern human brain size in European and Levantine
samples was about the same as that in late Neanderthals, but this was
followed by a reduction in the late Pleistocene-early Holocene, probably
partly correlated, at least, with a reduction in body size. Chris Stringer
