Both Sloan and Wilson neglect one exemption to copyright laws: "fair
usage". This is the very principle that academic publication is based
upon. One can quote, with appropriate attribution, another's work
without violating the copyright laws. This principle is well recognized by
the court system.
The whole problem is trying to apply traditional copyright laws to a
medium which is a cross between publication and conversation.
Perhaps e-mail is best classified as a personal communication?
