Folklore cats and microwaves

Why technologically incompetent? Why not a creative, but maladaptive,
misuse of an unfamiliar technology? (Like drinking and driving?) Do washing
machines, microwave ovens and clothes dryers come with instructions about
NOT putting live animals in? Probably not. Why would avoiding this practice
be 'obvious' to a person inexperienced with the machine?
