In re: toileting

Dear Kathi:
In English, there is Reginald [?] Reynolds' old CLEANLINESS AND GODLINESS,
which has a lot to say about the water closet, there is also georges
VIGARELLO's CONCEPTS OF CLEANLINESS - Changing attitudes in France since
the middle ages (Cambridge UP, 1988), a fascinating book which cites some
of the vast literature that seems to have grown up in French on these
topics, also, there is quite a literature in japanese dealing with both
japan, and also China (a friend of mine there once did a major compara-
tive study of toilets all over China and even in Tibet, but I'm not sure
that he published it, probably in japanese only). perhaps shying away from
these subjects has something to do with English-American cultures???

PS. Does B. latour's THE PASTEURIZATION OF FRANCE also talk about toilets?
I haven't read it, but I imagine that it might address these issues as well.
