The FACTS ON FILE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WORD AND PHRASE ORIGINS (1987) assigns
"melting pot" to Israel Zangwill in 1908 (as mentioned earlier).
There is a good definition of cultural relativism (see under "relativism",
pp.235-238) in Robert H. Winthrop's DICTIONARY OF CONCEPTS IN CULTURAL
ANTHROPOLOGY (Greenwood Press, 1991), but no dates are given.
The OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY has melting pot as a furnace term from 1535,
but no current definitions. I struck out on mosaic completely. Perhaps it is a
term used instead of cultural diversity?
