Robert Walker, Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, has won a
committee victory for a bill which would require NSF to eliminate one of its
Directorates. In the past he has specified that this should be the Social and
Behavioral Sciences and Economics Directorate; this year's bill does not spell
it out. It is expected to be brought to the House floor for debate and vote on
May 9th.

Similar budget and policy moves are already being attached to new legislation
in the shadow of yesterday's budget "solution"--Republicans are moving to
attach a series of restrictions on the EPA onto other legislation, for
example.
