I've often thought about Marie's "bon mot": "They want bread. Let them eat cake." Was she really being callous? Maybe she meant it, and that's why she lost her head. Sort of like Marcos' wife not saying: "They want socks? Let them have my shoes?" And, thus, keeping hers. Maybe I'm just mixing Marie's "bon mot" with one of my father's: "So you've got your cake; and you want to eat it too?" Utterly confused: "Well, no, I'll take bread," I'd say --"Do you want a piece?"
