CONFERENCE ON INTEGRATING APPALACHIAN HIGHLANDS ARCHAEOLOGY October 3-5, 1996 New York State Museum Albany, New York The Appalachian province continues to be marginal to discussions of Eastern Woodlands prehistory, with the result that these discussions suffer from exclusion of a major area that exhibits much variation. This conference seeks to bring together scholars from throughout the Appalachian Highlands, from Alabama to Gaspe , to focus attention on cultural developments in this vast, but poorly understood region. The conference goal is to provide a forum for communication between scholars working in the Appalachians and in so doing, to enable recognition of trends in Appalachian Highlands prehistory and to promote integration of this diverse and rich region into knowledge of the Eastern Woodlands. CONFERENCE FORMAT The conference will be organized into five symposia, a keynote address, and a panel discussion. SYMPOSIA Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene Colonization MidHolocene Social Integration and Adaptations Social Dynamics During Late Prehistory Demographic and Sociopolitical Responses to European Contact KEYNOTE Perspectives on Appalachian Archaeology Dr. James A.
