I have used in my Anthropology of Women and Gender course the following,
with success:

Weiner, Women of Value, Men of Renown.
Delaney, The Seed and the Soil (wonderful book about gender, religion,
rural Turkey).
MacCormack and Strathern, Nature, Culture and Gender (but have them read the
classic Ortner article first)
Gregor, Anxious Pleasures (sexuality in the Amazon)
Gilmore, Manhood in the Making.

Also, don't forget about the classic article in Sexual Meanings by Collier
and Rosaldo, Politics and Gender in Simple Societies.

Other book worth considering:

Miller, ed., Sex and gender Hierarchies.
Strathern, ed., Dealing with Inequality.
Atkinson and Errington, Power & Difference.
Kahn, Always Hungry, Never Greedy
Meigs, Food, Sex and Pollution.
Lepowsky, Fruit of the Motherland.
