"Bone-Burning" Rituals

I have a letter from the late Alexander Spoehr dated June 24, 1990 in which
he mentions ritual cremation of human bone. The exact text of the letter
reads:

"It is interesting that in the old 18th century Caltholic cemetery in Cebu
City in the Phillipines, non-Catholic bone-burning rituals (of skulls and
long bones, not of the recently deceased) still occur, though I was too
busy in 1975-76 to find out more about the matter"

Can anyone on this list shed some light (and/or point me to some
literature) on this practice - does it still exist?. I appreciate the help.
