Mr. (Dr?) Thornton,

I'm a grad student in Ed in the US. Here the classic text related to
language use is _Ways with Words_ by Shirley Brice Heath. She has new
material coming out on new racial formations in the US, I don't know if
it's in print yet.

In the US, the standard ethnography of ed curriculum tends to include
Willis's Learning to Labor, Michelle Fine Framing Dropouts, Lois Weis's
Working Class without Work. Quantz's review of Critical Ethnography in
Handbook of Qualitative Research in Education has a fabulous bibliography
on this literature.
